Join us for the “Earn your spot on the podium” challenge while we countdown to the Olympic Games. Skaters can print off the challenge worksheet or pick up one at the front desk. Skaters who turn in completed worksheets will receive a 🥇 medal based on their score.

It's so great seeing our hometown heroes take the ice at the Olympics. Skating Instructor Tessa Smith's #MyFavoriteOlympicMoment is:

"I’ll never forget Jason Brown’s River Dance free skate which he debuted at nationals. He just moved up to the Senior Men’s level that season, and so I had never heard of him before. The choreography was AMAZING from the start, and then the footwork hit and HE. LIT. UP. I have never seen such a strong connection between the audience and a skater before. Even without quads, he still placed first in his free skate.

That performance earned him a spot on Team USA headed to Sochi in 2014. His Olympic performance wasn’t as technically strong as it was the month before, but he still had so much fun with it and it was a great lesson in committing to the program until the very end. What’s even cooler is that he still represents a Chicago-area skating club and continues to be an inspiration to many skaters in this area."

The Winter Olympics are just around the corner and can you tell that we're excited! We're sharing our team's Olympic memories with all of you as we gear up for the games. Figure Skating Coordinator Kathy Janik's #MyFavoriteOlympicMoment is:

"My all-time favorite Olympic memories are from the 1994 Games in Lillehammer: I was watching them on a 14in box TV in my bedroom, sitting on the edge of my bed with all my skating friends. These games had some of my favorite skaters, to this day: Elvis Stojko, Philippe Candeloro, Viktor Petrenko, and Brian Boitano in Men’s Singles; Oksana Baiul, Nancy Kerrigan, Surya Bonaly and Katarina Witt in Ladies Singles; Ekaterina Gordeeva / Sergei Grinkov and Jenni Meno / Todd Sand in Pairs Skating; and of course the incomparable, Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean in Ice Dance.

But Kurt Browning always had my heart! He was such an incredible skater, and so funny in interviews and his show skating. I was positive I was going to marry Kurt Browning, one day. That, alas, didn’t come to pass. But this program has always been my favorite of his!"

Our team members are sharing their favorite Olympic memories as we countdown to the Winter Olympics. Skating Instructor Tina Nemeh's #MyFavoriteOlympicMoment is:

"1988 Olympic Gold Medal in Pairs went to skaters from the (then) Soviet Union, Ekaterina Gordeeva and Sergei Grinkov. Gordeeva and Grinkov at first objected to being paired together when their federation decreed that they would skate as partners, as both wanted to remain as singles skaters. But their size difference made them a startling duet. With his strength and her size, unprecedented moves became possible, such as their signature quadruple throw. Every one of their programs was powerful and moving, while being nearly technically perfect. Gordeeva/Grinkov won virtually every competition they entered. In the 31 competitions they completed at the Senior and professional levels, they finished first 24 times and finished off the podium only once.

Working together as much as they did, brought them close together, and married in April 1991. Their love and kindness for each other showed through their second Olympic appearance in 1994, earning a second Gold Medal. Only one year later, on Nov. 20, 1995, while on the ice, practicing for a professional tour Sergei, aged 28, died of a heart attack in Lake Placid, New York, while practicing with his wife and partner, "Katia" at his side. It left a hole in the skating community that, still affects skaters who knew them. They were one of the greatest pairs teams the world had ever seen."

We're counting down to the Winter Olympics with our favorite Olympic memories. Skating Instructor Diana Melnyk's #MyFavoriteOlympicMoment is:

"While everyone in America was rooting for Nancy Kerrigan after the highly scandalized Tonya Harding incident preceding the 1994 Lillehammer Olympics, I was quietly rooting for Oksana Baiul, a 16-year-old orphaned Ukrainian girl. That Olympics, Oksana took home the Gold Medal in Women’s Figure Skating and shocked the world stage, as she just came out of nowhere! I was hooked!

Growing up immersed in the Ukrainian-American community myself, as I am 100% Ukrainian by ethnicity, I was drawn in immediately to Oksana’s presence on the ice. I was deeply touched by Oksana’s personal story growing up an orphan in Soviet Ukraine, and so inspired by her talent and choreography - which was way ahead of its time - that I did everything I could to be a champion figure skater just like her.

I loved Oksana Baiul so much that I dressed up as her 2 years in a row for Halloween, one year in her long program costume, the other in her short program costume! I also met Oksana (alongside Ukrainian Olympian Victor Petrenko) as a young girl and was starstruck! And even when I traveled to Ukraine a few years back as an adult, I sought out and found the tiny ice rink in Odessa where Oksana trained under Coach Galina Zmievskaya and teammate Petrenko. Seeing that rink was on my bucket list!!
To this day, Oksana Baiul remains my number one sports hero, and I credit her for my taking a serious interest in competitive figure skating. The rest is just history!"
